State governor Kashim Shettima has cut short his trip to the UK and
made an emergency return home in response to the news that Boko Haram
had captured the strategic town of Bama.
Governor Shettima had been abroad and was scheduled to meet students sponsored by the state government studying medicine and geo-sciences in the UK and Sudan. However, after he got informed that the terrorist sect had captured Bama. Borno State's second city and was planning to advance on the capital Maiduguri, he decided to return home and offer leadership.
Arriving at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Governor Shettima immediately released funds to a committee set up to coordinate the distribution of relief and management of victims of the insurgency. Thousands of people have fled from towns like Banki, Gwoza and Bama that have come under attack from Boko Haram in recent weeks.
Enjoying its best military spell since the insurgency began over 10 years ago, Boko Haram have captured large swathes of territory over recent weeks. However, yesterday, Governor Shettima said that government troops have reclaimed Bama according to reports that he gathered.
Mallam Isa Gusau, the governor's official spokesman, said: " Governor Shettima returned mainly to provide needed leadership, be with his people, build public confidence, coordinate relief for victims, step up co-funding and psychological support for military. He was to be in UK to meet 20 students undergoing petroleum geo-sciences in addition to signing agreements for other human capacity development programmes and a follow up meetings with a water systems company required for domestic use and irrigation agriculture in Borno aimed at boosting jobs creation as a strategy to discourage economic based recruitment by Boko Haram insurgents.”
