OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES, FRDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA DR GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, GCFR ON THE NEED FOR URGENT ACTION TO STOP THE DOWNWARD SLIDE IN THE ELECTORAL FORTUNES OF THE PDP IN THE FORTHCOMING GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION IN ADAMAWA STATE

4th September, 2014.
OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT AND
COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED
FORCES, FRDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA DR
GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, GCFR ON THE
NEED FOR URGENT ACTION TO STOP THE
DOWNWARD SLIDE IN THE ELECTORAL
FORTUNES OF THE PDP IN THE FORTHCOMING
GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION IN ADAMAWA
STATE
Your Excellency,
It is with a deep sense of responsibility and
respect for the tenets of democracy, and also of
the unreserved loyalty we owe you as the leader
of the largest black political party in the world
and indeed the largest black nation that we
write to you. We write you with a saddened
heart and grave concern for the looming threat
to the already precarious state of Democracy,
security and Development in our dear state,
Adamawa.
Mr. President Sir, as we write this letter, the
agents of chaos, evil, instability and darkness
are at work, trying to frustrate the collective
resolve of the overtly patient and tolerant
people of Adamawa state. Your Excellency, our
concerns are borne out of the fact that any
further disruption of the peace and relative
security in Adamawa state can give room for
the expansion of the activities of insurgents in
the state, and by extension, the entire security
fabric of the nation. Worst still, we fear that the
chances of the great party, the people’s
Democratic Party (PDP) to win subsequent
elections in the state and to maintain its pride
of place as the vanguard for the toiling people
of Adamawa is on the brinks. Remember the
overwhelming support and massive votes you
garnered during the 2011 presidential election.
Mr. President, we write to you out of the strong
conviction that as leader of the great party, you
owe us, as well as other Nigerians, a level
playing field and an enabling environment for
the entrenchment of democracy, good
governance and the upliftment of the living
condition of the people of this state. We write
to you because as our president, you owe us
the security of our lives and property, as well as
that of all other people of this great country.
The sapping of these critical elements in our
dear state in the last seven years due to
political misrule, ineptitude, nepotism, disregard
for the rule of law and the enthronement of
impunity has kept development at bay in this
state. This trend has resulted in the consistent
economic backwardness and animated poverty
and want in our state. All these were the result
of the deficit of internal party democracy in the
state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party.
Our experience with the basics of democracy
and representation by popular choice has so far
been anything but democratic. So it was that in
the last couple of elections in the state, some
people with selfish vested interests simply
impose their preferred candidate, thereby
disregarding the utility of popular vote and
transparency in the process of governance.
Your Excellency, there is a credible and eminent
threat to Democracy, Security and Development
in Adamawa state.
If the forth coming party primary election in the
state is not transparently, credibly and carefully
conducted, the cord holding these triple
variables will snap with all its attendant
consequences.
At the moment sir, there is a formidable move
by the said agents of insecurity and instability
in our state to impose a candidate who is said
to be the preferred candidate of the presidency,
even where that runs counter to the
expectation, aspirations and popular choice of
members of the party. This is unfair and
against the spirit that dictates democracy. Mr.
President, let it be known that, the
determination of who becomes the PDP’s flag
bearer in the forth coming gubernatorial election
in Adamawa state is the exclusive prerogative
of the popular forces in the state’s chapter of
the PDP. You must not only uphold that as
sacrosanct, you must be seen to be doing so.
You know by now, at least from the Murtala
Nyako experience, much as we do, the
incalculable damage which could result from the
imposition of unpopular candidates on the
members of this party to beat.
Your Excellency, we implore you to openly and
publicly come out and distance the exalted
office of the president and your humble and
patriotic self from the undemocratic designs
and machinations of these agents of
retrogression in our great party in Adamawa
state.
We count on your prompt and proactive
response in the interest of Democracy, Security
and Development in Adamawa state in
particular, and Nigeria as a whole.
Thank you.
Long Live PDP!
Long Live Democracy!!
